International Human Rights Instruments
(cwsp)

The basic principles of equality between women and men are proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948. Article 7 states that “All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.” Based on this fundamental provision the United Nations, the International Labor Organization and the Council of Europe adopted a number of international documents for elimination of discrimination, all ratified by the Republic of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is firmly committed to the principles and goals of the final documents, adopted at the UN World Conferences on Women in: Mexico (1975), Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985), Beijing (1995).

According to its commitments to the fundamental international documents, the country is obliged to report periodically to the specialized UN bodies. More
