Regional Newsletter "Stop Violence Against Women"
About the Newsletter

Since 2004 the Center of Women’s Studies and Policies has been launching a regular regional newsletter in Bulgarian reporting on different aspects of violence against women.

The newsletter addresses the four main aspects of violence: trafficking in women, domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. The definition of violence against women used in the newsletter follows the one provided by the United Nations Declaration on the elimination of Violence against Women, Art.1: “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life”.

The project is implemented within the Stop Violence Against Women’s project – the website www.stopvaw.org for combating violence against women, in which the Center of Women’s Studies and Policies is monitor  for Bulgaria. The newsletter is intended to summarize in Bulgarian the important information, news, facts, trends, legislative reforms, etc. as they are announced on the website in English. Thus this source of exhaustive and various information will be available for the Bulgarian . On the other hand, the information selected with a view to the Bulgarian perspective better corresponds to the local practical and strategic needs and activities and directly refers to the target groups of the newsletter. Since they include Bulgarian lawyers, journalist, human rights activists, women's rights advocates, practitioners, etc the information is additionally selected with the object of the Bulgarian circumstances.

The ambition of the project is not only to provide with useful information selected target groups in Bulgaria but also to encourage reflection on the gender-based violation situation in Bulgarian with regard to the more global Euro-Asian background. The latter constructive comparison poses the Bulgarian experience in combating violence against women in a bigger perspective thus assisting the identification of the country-specific weak and strong aspects of the process.

The newsletter id thematically organized in two parts. The first one presents the positive experience from the region. and is divided in 4 sections: legislative and institutional reforms, events, good practices and initiatives of the non-governmental sector in the 29 countries from Central and eastern Europe, the countries from the Caucas region, Central Asia, Russia, Mongolia and Kosovo. The second part of the newsletter is focused on the Bulgarian reality – the efforts of the government and the non-governmental sector and the steps that have to be taken. Thus the national strategies, news, achievements and responses to the problem "violence agaisnt women" are addressed not as isolated cases, but as part of the regional dynamics of the fight against gender based violence.

The issues of the newletter in pdf format in Bulgarian language are available in the section Regional Newsletter "Stop Violence against Women" in our virtual Library.
