Roots Project
About the project

In January 2009, Center of Women's Studies and Policies started the implementation of the two-year international project ROOTS (Italy, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece).

The project is financed within the EU Commission PREVENTION AND FIGHT AGAINST CRIME Programme, Thematic priority "Trafficking in human beings - prevention, protection and assistance of victims".

ROOTS is an initiative for overall analysis of the social, legal and administrative barriers for the successful reintegration of victims of trafficking in Bulgaria and Romnia.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • To promote exchange of expertise for the process of voluntary return of women victims of trafficking from Italy as well as the specifities of their reintegration in Bulgaria and Romania and to explore best practices to involve victims in initiatives for their protection in order to build a trusting relationship between them and the ONGs and institutions working in the field of assistance and support;
  • To implement methodologies and procedures through different pilot initiatives such as: support to the victims through return arrangements, vocational training activities, support to the victims to enter the labour market, and information campaign;
  • To disseminate the results across Europe to encourage similar initiatives.

The project entitled ROOTS (2008-2010) is financed and implemented with the financial support from Programme Prevention and Fight Against Crime, European Commission, General Directorate Home Affairs.
