YOUR OPINION MATTERS - ALWAYS EXPRESS IT!

Media play the important role to inform people. Actually, they achieve much more - through the language they use, they also express attitudes and give their opinion both about events and people. Very often they use stereotypical images and portray men and women in a different way.

Through the television and the cinema a lot of new words come into the language, like "adrenaline girl" (from the popular TV show "The Maters of TV") or " showgirl" which we automatically relate to the images of girls in show programmes. And why is there no "adrenaline boy" or a "showboy"?

Very often media create the image of the ideal woman, fascinating with her beauty and charm. Nevertheless if the published materials are about the life of a famous model, actress or singer, all the photos, comments and descriptions she would be represented as: first, extremely attractive woman admired by men and copied by women; and second, as a successful and contented by her achievements society woman. Moreover, very often the media publish information strengthening the stereotype that a pretty woman can "grab" a rich man.

TASK. Look for some examples in the internet or the media for words for professions, titles or positions for women.

What is the context they used in and what is the attitude of the author expressed through the feminine or the masculine gender? Write an essay and share your opinion. Use the response window below.
