Lesson 3
Did you know that ...

In some countries and regions of the world it will be difficult - or even not possible - for a girl to go to school or finish it. And there are a number of reasons for that - poverty, religion, culture etc. The stereotype that women should be devoted only to the household discourages or even forces women not to study.

Today two-thirds of the people who can't read or write are girls. Three-fifths of the drop-out students are girls. More girls than boys lack basic literacy and computer skills. In many countries more and more women go to University but in many poor countries women still lag behind their male colleagues.

That is why many people and international organisations work very hard to educate all children in the world, and especially - the girls from the poor countries.

This is not the situation in Bulgaria today - education is obligatory till the age of 16 and everybody is entitled to the right to education as one of their basic human rights.

However, there are still fields of education which are considered as more appropriate for men or women. Even today, even in the EU. If you are interested in boring facts and figure - HERE you can find some data what women and men study at the university in Europe and Bulgaria.
